Quantitative Techniques

Course Summary

Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data taught as method: the fastest reliable route to the answer, with drills that fix the habit rather than the question.

What's in the course (1st lesson always FREE)

  • Turn a word problem into an equation or a proportion before reaching for a calculator.
  • Use ratios, percentages and successive change as one family of tools rather than ten separate tricks.
  • Solve number-system and divisibility questions from factor structure instead of trial.
  • Read a data set or caselet, decide what is being asked, and answer from the numbers given.
  • Work at exam pace: choose the shortest route and abandon a dead one early.
  • Check an answer for reasonableness in seconds, and catch the error before it costs a mark.

The Course Architecture

What's inside.

Ten chapters of the quantitative core, run the same way each time: the idea built from first principles, the method that follows from it, the shortcuts that are safe, and the traps that make a correct method produce a wrong answer. Number system, HCF and LCM, percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, averages, time and work, time and distance, and set theory.

Each chapter has a Foundation track that assumes nothing and an Advanced track that trains the same idea under constraint - fixed costs and changing bases, weighted averages, instalments and present value, mixtures and replacement, remainder conditions. Every module closes with a caselet: a data-rich situation that has to be read and interpreted, not just plugged into a formula.

How to use it.

Work one chapter at a time, Foundation then Advanced. In the Foundation modules do the arithmetic by hand until the method is automatic; the calculator is not the skill being tested. In the Advanced modules time yourself, and when a question goes wrong, decide whether the method was wrong or the set-up was, because they are repaired differently.

What students get.

  • Ten chapters, each with a Foundation and an Advanced track
  • First-principles derivations, so a forgotten formula can be rebuilt
  • Shortcuts with the conditions in which they are safe
  • Caselet sets that train reading a data situation under time
  • Worked solutions for every question
  • A progress panel that saves scores and position

Learning Outcomes

  • Ten chapters - number system, HCF and LCM, percentages, profit and loss, interest, ratio and proportion, averages, time and work, time and distance, set theory.
  • Foundation tracks that build each idea from first principles.
  • Advanced tracks that train the same idea under constraint.
  • Caselet sets - a data-rich situation with inferential questions, so the numbers are read, not just plugged.
  • Worked solutions for every question.
  • A progress panel that saves scores and position automatically.
